Frequently asked questions
Microsoft Future Pro Photo Contest FAQ 2009
When is the deadline for submitting entries?

April 30th, 2009 at 11:59:59 PM PDT.
There will be no extensions and late entries will not be accepted.

Is this contest open to college students in other countries?

Yes, except where prohibited by law, the Microsoft Future Pro Photographer Contest is open to all students worldwide who are 18 years and older and currently enrolled in a two or four year degree granting college or university.

Does Microsoft own the rights to images submitted to the contest?

As an entrant, you retain the copyright ownership of the images you submit. Submitting an entry does not assign or transfer any ownership or copyrights to Microsoft; those rights remain with the creator of the original work. However as a condition of accepting a prize, you agree to grant Microsoft the right to reproduce and display the image, credited with your first and last name, in print and on the web, for the purposes of promoting this contest.

Can I submit more than one entry in a category?

Sure... the only limitation is three TOTAL entries in the contest. So, for example, you can enter one in each category, or two in Nature & Landscape and one in People & Portraits, or all three in Sports & Photojournalism.

Can I mail in my entries?

Nope. It's the new millennium and we are enthusiastically embracing the digital age that is now upon us. All entries are to be submitted online through the contest website www.microsoft.com/prophoto.

I still shoot with a film; can I still enter the contest?

Yes, however we are only accepting submissions on-line which means your entries will need to be scanned and reduced to the proper size before entering.

What size file should I submit?

For this competition, bigger is not better. To keep the system running smoothly we ask that the longest dimension of your entry, vertical or horizontal, not exceed 1024 pixels and be in JPEG format.

How does Microsoft ensure that the entries are original student images?

Each winner will be required to provide proof that they are the creator of the image. This may proven by providing one of the following items:

A copy of the original RAW file.
Proof of possession of the camera that captured the image.
A signed and notarized Document of Authenticity from a fully accredited instructor at their university.

All prizes will be withheld until proper verification is received by each winner.

Can I submit a 16 bit Tiff?

No. Only 8 bit JPEGs please.

I changed my mind; can I replace a previously submitted entry?

All entries, once submitted, are final.

Cool, $20 grand! I'm a student; do I have to claim this on my taxes?

I invite you to visit www.irs.gov for your answer.

So when do I get my stuff?

We're anticipating thousands of entries so don't start remodeling the dorm room just yet. If you should defeat the odds and actually win a prize, the rules state that all prizes will be delivered within 60 days of announcing the winners. Think late September.

I'm "home-schooled" am I eligible to enter?

Sorry, the contest is only open to students 18 years and older attending an accredited degree-granting college or university.

Since Microsoft sponsors the contest, will entries from competing operating systems be disqualified?

The contest is designed to recognize and reward the very best college and university student photographers worldwide regardless of the tools used to create the image. Microsoft is committed to carrying the art of digital photography forward by encouraging new and emerging talent at the student level to learn, utilize, and implement state-of-the-art equipment, software, and techniques to produce the finest images possible.

How much enhancement and manipulation can I apply to the image?

Only enhancements to tone, color, and cropping are allowed when optimizing an image. Photoshop may be judiciously used to enhance the image, but no manipulation or compositing is allowed.

Will you accept nude entries?

Yes, as long as they can be considered artistic and not violate any local laws or ordinances.

So, who are the judges?

Bambi Cantrell, Owner and Photographer, Cantrell Portrait Designs
Dennis Keeley, Department Chair, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena
Lauren Wendle, Publisher, Photo District News
